Marriage Equality Becomes Reality in Greece

In January 2024, I spoke with El País about the legalization of same-sex marriage in Greece and the developments it has triggered within the government.

The article, titled “El matrimonio gay provoca una crisis en el Gobierno de Mitsotakis” , explores how a reform widely framed as a step forward for rights and equality has also exposed deep ideological divisions both within the ruling party and across Greek society.

The reform has not only mobilized progressive actors but has also activated conservative reflexes within parts of the political system that had remained relatively quiet in recent years. The debate has provided an opportunity for far-right actors to reposition themselves by framing the issue as part of a wider cultural divide, they seek to consolidate support and expand their influence.
